O Christmas Tree comes from the German carol O Tannenbaum, whose melody is an old folk tune. The best-known lyrics were written in 1824 by Leipzig organist and teacher Ernst Anschütz, praising the evergreen fir whose leaves stay green through winter. It has since been sung across the world in many languages.
