Away in a Manger Lyrics
Away in a manger, no crib for a bed
The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head
The stars in the bright sky looked down where He lay
The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay
The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes
But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes
I love Thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky
And stay by my cradle till morning is nigh
Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever, and love me, I pray
Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care
And take us to heaven to live with Thee there
About Away in a Manger
Away in a Manger first appeared in print in the United States in the late 1880s and was for a time wrongly credited to Martin Luther — a myth that has since been put to rest. In America it is usually sung to the tune known as Mueller, while in Britain the melody Cradle Song by William J. Kirkpatrick is more common. Its tender picture of the infant Jesus in the hay has made it one of the most beloved carols.
Our Love to Sing choir keeps it soft and simple, so everyone can follow every line. It's a gentle favorite for school nativities, carol services and bedtime singing at home.
